My review of GearBest

In the autumn of 2015 I was very excited about the new hoverboards/scooters/swagways that many seemed to enjoy. After a while I decided to buy one from the company GearBest. That was a BIG mistake and this is a warning to you if you are searching for information about GearBest.

It started with me using Google to find good alternatives. I could not decide from where to buy. The next day when I opened my Facebook account there were an ad from GearBest. I searched around for GearBest and could not find so much bad information and thought that this company maybe could be ok to buy from.

I wanted one of the fastest hoverboards out there on the market and GearBest seemed to have a very fast one: The Aosder Self Balancing Scooter with 4400mAh Battery. GearBest promised a max speed of 20 km/h which looked like a new generation, since the old ones only had a speed of 10-12 km/h.

And since the speed was very important to me I searched for more information and found that another potential buyer had specifically asked them about the speed, and GearBest then answered that the max speed was 20 km/h.

When the package finally arrived after nearly 1 month I was very happy.

But my mood soon changed when I on the package read that the max speed was only 12 km/h.

I then opened the manual and there it said the max speed was only 10 km/h!

After around 25 mails back and forth the situation is like this: GearBest have admitted that the hoverboard do not have a max speed of 20 km/h but they still have the wrong information on their website. GearBest first offered me some points so I could get things a little bit cheaper next time I bought things from them. I said I was not so interested in buying more and then GearBest offered me 5 dollars(!). After more negotiations 10 dollars and after that 20 dollars. 20 dollars is a fraction of what I paid. But finally after these around 25 mails they agreed to refund 50 dollars. My stance is that since I bought a product that is not what I was offered and since the max speed is 40-50% slower than what GearBest promised, it's reasonable that I get a 40-50% refund (that is over 100 dollars). But 50 dollars are better than nothing.

At the same time as I ordered the Aosder scooter/hoverboard, I also ordered a Portable Oxford Fabric Backpack for Balancing Scooter. It arrived after 5-6 weeks. I put the hoverboard in it and tried it on. Then the backpack broke! On the first use! After a few seconds! They have now finally refunded me 100% for the backpack.

Is GearBest a scam company? Do GearBest try to deceive their customers?

Signs that GearBest is a scam company:

  • GearBest do not have the correct product information on their webpage for the Aosder Hoverboard
  • It's not a typo since GearBest also on a direct question replies with wrong information
  • GearBest still continue to use the wrong information after GearBest have admitted to me that it is not correct. (January 8, 2016)
  • GearBest first offered me a reasonable refund after around 25 mails and photos
  • The other product I ordered (Portable Oxford Fabric Backpack) broke after a few seconds of use.
  • The product reviews on their webpage are looking great. But remember GearBest is controlling which product reviews should be visible. I tried to submit a review for the backpack (about that it broke after a few seconds of use) and they refused to make it visible on their website.

Conclusion: GearBest has not been a nice experience. There are other companies on the Internet that I will try next time.
And you have been warned! ;)
